Reflection (Installation Art)

“The greatest of art's virtues is its flexibility - its availability for interpretation - which creates communication between artist and viewers for an artwork to be valuable.”

After the class was assigned to make an installation art, many ideas came out of almost everyone's mind. Lots of topics were raised and suggested. Everyone was so hyped that it even got to the point of confusion among the class. There was a great discussion and the planning lasted for almost two days. Our teacher was then notified by the issue we wanted to convey, yet the two-day plan came to no avail since our teacher directly saw and identified the issue we wanted to convey. The “meaning” of our installation art may vary depending on the viewers’ perspectives. That, too, contributes to the challenging part. The planning of as to how the class should conceal the meaning to the audience for them to be the ones to identify the issue was extremely hard. But then after we consulted our teacher, we then knew the things that we should do and we came to conclude that the plan was final. We had the issue about the influence of media and on how the media became biased and distorted.

Then the day of the output making came, everyone were already so busy and contained of the things that we were doing. Some were assigned for doing certain tasks. Ranging from the purchasing of materials to the making of certain details for the installation art. The putting up of the whole output was also a challenging task since we intended and planned to use rotten vegetables for the representation of the negative things that the media focuses mainly on. The spoiled vegetables started turning yellowish, became slimy, and had a foul odor. It started to have a strong smell; it was hard for us to stick it on the medium since the adhesive we used did not have that much power to hold it up. The other details though, after attaching the vegetables, were easier and started to flow smoothly.

Overall, our installation art was understood in the way we wish it to be. Majority of the viewers got the message we wanted to convey and accurately identified the issue being emphasized. There were varieties of interpretations from the viewers, but those were all close to what we were trying to deliver. The process on making our art work may have been very challenging; may have caused exertion of too much effort; may have caused our classroom to be full of the vegetables stench but, it still came out great and we were very proud of our installation art. The experience was worth it and this will serve as our inspiration for future projects/tasks to do.
